A Word From Frank:

Frank Fleischer

It's hard to believe, but this is the 200th time I've sat down at the computer to put out an issue of The Straight Poop. I could say that I've been doing it for two centuries, even two millenia, since Issue No. 1 went out on December 31, 1999!

While introducing our current Featured Web Site about Wikipedia, the online encylopedia, I recalled that it wasn't all that long ago when many of us had a 20-or-so volume printed and bound encyclopedia in our homes, and enterprising young people went door-to-door to sell them to us. Not any more, in our electronic age. And that got me thinking about how much has changed in the last couple of generations.

I marvel when I think about my father's period of time on this earth, from when he was born in 1902 to his death in 1975. In that span of years we went from Wilbur and Orville Wright making (hu)mans' first powered flight at Kitty Hawk to Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon. Amazing.

My boyhood pal Mike and I used to read Dick Tracy in the comics and pretend that we had his "two-way wrist radios". Today's kids almost really do have them.

Yet despite all of our advancements and technology, when Mother Earth decides to humble us, she does a pretty good job of it. Something to ponder.

See you next time. Wishing you a warm puppy 'til then.
Frank

Featured Website: Dog, from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You probably thought you knew just about everything about dogs. Not even close, you'll discover when you look at this comprehensive encyclopedic article about (hu)mans' best friend... their history, their attributes, their anatomy and loads more... fascinating reading.

"The dog is a canine omnivorous mammal that has been domesticated for somewhere between 14,000 and 150,000 years. In this time, the dog has developed into hundreds of breeds with a great degree of variation. For example, heights ranging from just a few inches (such as the Chihuahua) to nearly three feet (such as the Irish Wolfhound), and colors ranging from white to black with reds, grays, and browns also occurring in a tremendous variation of patterns. Dogs come in many shapes and sizes..." [continue]
The Puppy Corner: From Pup's Perspective

DogReader.com is a wonderful resource for interesting and useful articles, covering the whole range of dog-related subjects, including puppies. Here's a recent article:

"From pups perspective, you are a giant. Whether you are a growing pre-teen or whether you match Shaquille ONeal in size, you are still a giant to pup. If you have any doubt, go down on the floor and look up at people from pups point of view." ... [continue]

Dog Health & Nutrition: Cold Weather Protection

Katie is a Siberian Husky, so there's not a lot I have to worry about for her regarding cold weather, but I do have to keep the fur on the bottom of her paws trimmed so ice won't clog up the space between her toes. With many breeds, however, a lot more is necessary.

From Paw-Rescue.org: "Following are timely tips to protect pets in cold weather: Wipe snow and ice off your dog's feet. Little ice cubes can form in the sensitive spaces between the toes and toe-pads. Remove the ice carefully with your fingers since it may cling to the hairs between the paws. Clip the fur between toe pads to reduce the amount of snow that collects between toes." ... [continue]
Dog Activities and Training: Positive Reinforecement: Training Your Dog Or Cat With Treats and Praise

Remember the adage, "Spare the rod and spoil the child?" Well, fortunately, that concept has disappeared in many circles. Here's a well thought out article on using treats and praise to get the job done, from the Dumb Friends League, an outstanding rescue organization in Denver.

"Positive reinforcement is the presentation of something pleasant or rewarding immediately following a behavior. It makes that behavior more likely to occur in the future, and is one of the most powerful tools for shaping or changing your pets behavior." ... [continue]

What our customers say: The two beds I ordered arrived today. I thought that all the letters I had read about dogs that 'immediately knew the beds were for them' were somewhat exaggerated. I was wrong. Even the dog we've had for four years that wouldn't even climb up on the couch with our old dog climbed into her new Kuranda bed and snuggled into the sheepskin like it was an old friend. We are amazed! Even the cats (we have three) are liking the beds, especially when the dogs go outside. The animals look so comfortable that my husband and I may order a couple of beds for us! Just kidding... We are looking forward to the future with our happier pets. Thank you!
